Save Run

Running Preservation Society

I have very quiet neighbors, dead quiet. My backyard is the Albany Rural Cemetery, near Albany, NY. Something that a lot of people don't know is that cemetery's are great places to run. ARC is no exception. Its nearly 500 acres are filled with three ponds, five streams, and lots of hills. Not to mention that there is a President of the United States, 5 Governors, 3 members of the Continental Congress, 2 members of the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention, 13 members of the Colonial Assembly, 8 Presidential Cabinet members, 5 Ambassadors and many Senators, Congressmen, and Judges buried there.

So, if you're ever in the Albany area, make sure to check it out -- www.albanyruralcemetery.org

One of my regular runs is through a cemetary down the road form my house. It is really quiet and peaceful. I always like looking at the dates on the headstones. It really is a great place to run.

I love running and training in cemetaries. Hill training, regular interval routes. And lets not forget, the folks inside aren't gonna bother you. The folks on the outside don't enjoy staying there too much.

Heather, funny you should mention that. I ran a marathon yesteday and at mile 20-21, the mileage exactly where most people hit the wall... there was a cemetary. Serious.

The best part folks... it was the 20-21 mile stretch. So you're worn out. Well, its the inagural downtown marathon. So there are tons of people who don't know what they are doing. Well, we came out of a park and there were tons of people who were out of their cars cursing at us, honking horns, etc. Spectators were remarkably absent. So let me set the stage, you're tired, you look to your left, angry drivers cussing you out. To your right... a cemetary. That was simply the worst mile I've ever ran period.
