I would just like to know what the reasons are for elite runners competing in races such as marathons. Is it the money, the fame, or other reasons?

the fame? what fame? outside of the running community i would say that even people like ryan hall are pretty obsolete. if it was any other sport, i would definitely say they do it for all of the above but with running... SOME elite runners make a lot of money because they have some deal with some shoe company or whatever but i think there are a whole lot more out there who are just as great but don't have a huge company behind them and don't get a lot of press and they don't make that much money. i would say that the vast majority of elites do it because they love running. marathoning hurts too much to do it for any other reason. i mean, it's not like football where you eat like a fat ass, screw around at practice, sit on the bench half the time and still get a salary....

I told about everyone I know I was going to see Ryan Hall. Every single person said "who?" I don't think there is too much of a difference in normal runners and "elite" runners. Every runner wants to be faster and stronger and better, elite runners are just really good at it. Some of them eventually get the sponsorships and race money, but they are still running for the same reason as the rest of us. They weren't always a pro and probably didn't start out running thinking about achieving money and fame.

41:19, but the interesting thing is that two weeks later, I ran a half marathon that was on the same course as the 10k (just rearranged a bit, with a few miles added), and if I had run the 10k at the same pace I ran my half marathon, I would have go…
