Mark, I did the steamboat race this year...water was brutal cold and for someone who lives at sea level the altitude was killer but I hit my goal time.

Just get some swim practice in next time. Think of the swimming as a warmup.
Jen, best advice for the swim is to pace yourself. Keep thinking that you still have 2 events to compete in. The bike is my strong event, so I keep myself in check knowing that I'll be going all out on the bike.

I did my first triathlon in August. This was an adventure tri with 1/2 mile open swim, 12 miles mountain biking, and 4 miles trail running. I had a blast! The swimming part took me by surprise. I wasn't afraid of the open water per se. I just went out WAY to fast and didn't know how to pace myself. Any tips for a newbie?

I have an australian shepherd and he LOVES to run. In fact you have to run them or else they'll find ways to get in trouble when you're not around. I run him in the morning for 4 miles and then my wife will run him in the afternoon. They are great...
