Hey Eric, finished my 1st half marathon the weather was PERFECT and I felt good. started off to fast (I knew better), but there were so many people I had to dodge it was crazy. Every race (5K, half & full marathon) sold out completely! didn't finished in the time I wanted (2:30 was my finish time) but I'm trying not to beat myself up about it. I have a question for you, I run with a group three times a week at 5am, they are pretty fast runners (I think), I use to be able to keep up with them until I injured my leg in July (over training for a urban adventure race). I couldn't stay home and lick my wounds, I still went out and walked, they were so supportive of me they walked with me some days. now that I'm fully healed (SEVERAL months now) I can't keep up with them, they are SO much faster it's crazy. I'm intimidated by there pace, and to be honest I'm embarrassed I can't keep up. I began to give excuses and have been running alone. I'm a 10 minute miler and they all finished the half marathon under 2 hours. I don't know why I can't keep it together with my breathing, because my body feels good when I run. I really need help because I miss running with them and I REALLY want to get faster. Can you give any pointers on breathing or getting faster? I have the best watch (garmin forerunner), clothes, shoes and I'm still not seeing progress. I'm so bothered internally by this, I know it may seem silly, but only runners understand the strong passion we have for this addiction. I have no one else in my inner circle to talk to about this becuase I'm the only road runner.
Thank in advance,
Tyra
Hey Eric,
Thanks for the warm comments. Your running log is impressive (i want to be like that when I grow up), any way I read 2 books on the best man & lady Ultra marathoners. Dean Karnazes has a book called the ultra marathon man and Pam Reed has a book called the extra mile. Both are winners of the badwater desert run and they both are at the top of the running game. If you haven"t read them please do, they both are GREAT books.
Run on bro...

About Me:
I'm currently pacing/coaching for the San Francisco Marathon. I will also run my first Ultra (50k)this December.
Here is a brief running history...........I started running in late 1988. I was kinda forced by my uncle, my Uncle Sam ( I joined the Army). I ran alot but for the most part it was under 10 miles at a time. After 11 years in the service I got out of the Army and pretty much stopped running. After a few years I felt I was getting old, slow and fat so I started running again.
I kept my mileage low, never running more then 5 miles. Then I had the desire to run a half marathon and the rest is as they say is history.
In two years I have run 15 half marathons and 2 full marathons. I run the halves for time but not the fulls ( just like running the distance). Some day I'll run a full marathon for time but I don't know when. For the record I keep my time under 4:30 for a full.
I'm branching out to the ultra distances now. After my first marathon I crossed the finish line and looked at my running partner and said "It felt too short and I could go further". I then drank a beer and started thinking of ultras. Time and injuries have kept me from that but this year it WILL happen and if the 50k does not kill me or my desire to run over 26 miles I'll start training for a 50 mile run.
I have an australian shepherd and he LOVES to run. In fact you have to run them or else they'll find ways to get in trouble when you're not around. I run him in the morning for 4 miles and then my wife will run him in the afternoon. They are great...
