About Me:
I am a guy who truly loves running and all the benefits that come from it. I am an avid marathoner and recently completed my third this year where I ran a new PR of 3:06:01 and qualified for Boston for the second time. It was also my 10th marathon overall. I am not by any means an MP3 or an Ipod runner. Screw that! You want to get back to the roots of running?... trying just running with you and your thoughts.

Third Times a Charm. Whistlestop Marathon Report

Saturday, October 11th's marathon set up to be a perfect day to run... and I needed it to be. After enduring two heartbreaking marathons earlier this year where I just missed my 3:15 Boston qualifier by running a 3:17:45 in Napa Valley in March and 3:17:19 at Grandma's in June, I needed things to go right for me a couple Saturday's ago in Ashland, WI for The Whistlestop Marathon, and they did. The weather couldn't have been any better if you would have ordered it. The Whistlestop is not your typ… Continue

Ach, Du Lieber! It's Oktoberfest!

This past Saturday, I ran a tune up race in preparation for the Whistlestop Marathon in Ashland, WI. The race was called The Jim Gokey Memorial Half Marathon and it is held in La Crosse, WI in conjuction with the Oktoberfest festivities that are held there. The race went surprisingly well. I didn't necessarily expect a great result especially since I had a two hour drive after work on Friday night, didn't get to my parents farm until 1am, tossed and turned in bed for four hours and then was up a… Continue

impressive PR in La Crosse...congrats. being from fargo the elevation in denver was 1 of 2 obstacles for me, second being terrain. the hills were relentless. i thought my pace would be faster and my PR better, but it was hard to adjust to the shortness of breath and the inclination of hills. its only my second marathon i finished in 3:37. i wanted a 3:30 or better. oh well big fargo marathon may 9, 2009 and i think that will be my next. hopefully next year i can start upping my marathons!
anyways colorado...i cant say enough wonderful things about that state. denver is a beautiful place. the denver mara is pretty new being the 3rd annual this past sunday. i say either the boulder backroads mara which was what i initially wanted to do (which is a BQ too and on dirt roads) or...well actually i just saw the page for fort collins and i almost would like to do that 1 now! just for scenic route alone. also there is pikes peak ascent/mara the 08 male winner took it in over 3 hours!( they say its a half hour/mile run) woof. denver is great but to be in the country like that would be awesome! let me know what you decide!!

hahaa thanks :) you're like my own personal cheerleader!! i'll definitely check out ft. collins. i'm still trying to figure out what i'd like to do in 2009 post-boston, so if you have any recommendations, feel free!

take care ~ erin

haha, well, it was an experience. i hit a PW by about 20 mins (a 4:48- holy crap!!). i attribute it to my right hip flexor being sore; my left foot bothering me slightly; the general fatigue of doing 3 marathons in 4 weeks; and maybe the altitude; and the hilly course. it was a beautiful course, and we ran through 'hoods and downtown, though we didn't see the mountains very many times. apparently the denver marathon is the biggest and flattest CO marathon, so i'd be leary of fort collins if i were you... though admittedly i don't know anything about the town. what i heard most about dealing with the altitude was to drink a lot - to stay hydrated. it's a well-organized race, though. cotton t-shirt (bummer), nice medal (cool), a little beer garden afterward, and the course support was good. they also have a half and a marathon relay, so it can be congested for the first half.

hey there! big congrats on your new PR and another BQ. that must feel great! as for me, i didn't run as well as i wanted to in chicago. the weather was warm again, though not as bad as 2007 (that was my first marathon; talk about getting hazed into the marathon world!). anyway, i decided early on to run conservatively and to just enjoy the crowds, take in the sights, etc. that said, i finished in a lousy 4:07 or 4:09 (i don't remember which), but it was in the top 25% of the 31k field. how crappy is it that my two worst marathons have been at chicago!! i'm running denver with some friends on 10/19 (it's a friend's 50th state completion), but since i've never run marathons this close together before, i have no expectations :) ah well. thanks for the msg and big congrats again! i'll see you at boston... i just got my confirmation card in the mail last week!

this fall is a bit of an experiment. the timing was accidental, but without going into a million details, i figured i'd see how running almost back-to-back marathons went. i max at about 50 miles/week- that's when i really start to notice that my ITBs start to bother me- so most 'build weeks' range between 35-40. my avg week is closer to 30-35. i just read part of your blog, and it sounds like your 20 miler was through madison, right? i only remember bc when i ran in madison's marathon in may, i saw wild turkeys! it was awesome!! anyway, i'm hoping to BQ for 2010 in chicago and/or denver this year. my PR is a 3:37 that i set in austin in february 2008, and i'd love to get it down to a 3:33. so far, the body is feeling good and rested... i ran for the first time since the akron marathon on 9/26 saturday and yesterday, and i'll probably only run 1-2x this week before chicago on sunday. lord knows the weather will be better this year! anyway, take care, and have an amazing race!!! see you in boston!

thanks for your note, jamie! chicago's actually on sunday, 10/12, so i'm eagerly awaiting it :) i ran in akron, OH's race two weeks ago, have chicago on 10/12, and denver on 10/19... marathons #6, 7, and 8, respectively :)

thanks for the tips about boston. i'm really looking forward to it and to training in the horrendous chicago winters :)

happy running! and i'm relieved to see that there are other non-i-pod or MP3-wearing runners still left in the world... rock on, my friend!

The doughnut run is so amzing, first you start out eating a doughtnut then run a lap, and you repeat this until you throw up, if you do not complete the 400 in given time, do not eat doughnut in give time, or bitch out. you are out.
